Alec Stock was probably the manager who did most to establish the Glovers as FA Cup giantkillers and ensure that the name of Yeovil was known throughout the land. He was also the first Somerset born man to manage Yeovil.
Born in Peasedown St. John near Bath in 1917, he had a short playing career before the war with Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers. After the hostilities ended, he came to Yeovil in 1946 as player manager, and without doubt his finest hour was taking Yeovil to the 5th round of the FA Cup in 1949, beating Bury and then the mighty Sunderland, before playing Manchester United at Maine Road, as Old Trafford was still being re-built following bomb damage. He also won the Southern League Cup in 1946/47 and the Somerset Professional Cup in 1946/47 (shared), and 1947/48 (outright).
He went on to manage Leyton Orient, AS Roma, Queens Park Rangers, Luton Town, Fulham and Bournemouth, after which he retired to the coast. He took Fulham to the 1975 FA Cup final against West Ham United, and finally passed away in a nursing home in Wimborne Minster in 2001. A true Yeovil legend.
