Billy Kingdon was the Yeovil manager as wartime loomed over Britain, and he stayed for the duration of World War II. He was born in Worcester in June 1907, and initially joined Kidderminster Harriers, then on to Aston Villa. He was a wing half or half back and enjoyed a long career at Villa between 1925 and 1936. He made 223 appearances scoring 5 goals before moving to the South Coast with Southampton.
In January 1938 he joined Yeovil as player-manager and remained until 1946 when he returned to his trade as a carpenter. During his tenure the Somerset Professional Cup won won in 1937/38 and 1938/39. In 1947 he accepted a position as manager of Weymouth, and also ran the Fountain Hotel in the town. He left Weymouth Football Club in 1948, but remained living locally and died in 1977 aged 71.
